Origin and History
Baoule, also known as Baule or Bawule, is a Niger Congo language spoken by approximately 4.7 million individuals in the central and southern Ivory Coast, including the regions of Lacs, Lagunes, Gôh-Djiboua, Sassandra Marahoué, Vallée du Bandama, Woroba, and Yamoussoukro.
Baoulé is a member of the Kwa branch of the Central Tano branch's Niger Congo language family, forming a dialect continuum with Anyin and closely aligned with Nzema and Sehwi. It is the traditional language of the Baoulé people, Ivory Coast's largest ethnic group. The language of the Akan people who inhabit Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire is Baoule. Three hundred years ago, when Asante came to power, they migrated westward from Ghana. Via the language of Baoule, their oral and historical traditions are passed down, including the storey of how they broke away from the Asante.Places spoken
It is spoken by about 2.1 million people in central and southern Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) (in 1993). It is also known as Baule, Baule-Ando or Bawule.
