Origin and History

Kimbundu is the second most frequently spoken Bantu language in Angola, a Bantu language often referred to as Mbundu or 'North Mbundu. ' In Guthrie's classification, the Kimbundu languages are a group of Bantu languages coded in zone H.20.

Dialects

Until recently, Ngoya was considered a dialect of Kimbundu to its south, but it has now been recognised as a language in its own right and may be a transition between Kimbundu and Umbundu.

Its speakers are concentrated in the north-west of the country, especially in the provinces of Luanda, Bengo, Malanje and Cuanza Norte. It was spoken by Ambundu. One of the main languages of Angola and its capital, Luanda, is Kimbundu, also called North Mbundu or Loanda. Kimbundu is spoken as their primary language by about one-third of Angola's population of about 12 000 000.
