Slovak language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.

    Origin and History

The West Slavic language of the Czech-Slovak group is Slovak or, alternatively, Slovak. Slovak is so closely related to the Czech, Polish, and Sorbian languages of eastern Germany that, to a very high degree, there is mutual intelligibility. In the high mediaeval period, the Czech-Slovak group developed within Western Slavic, and in the early modern era, the standardisation of Czech and Slovak within the Czech-Slovak dialect continuum emerged. The modern Slovak alphabet and written standard was codified by Ludovít Štúr in the late mid-19th century and reformed by Martin Hattala. Slovak is, like other Slavic languages, a fusional language with a fluid morphology structure and a relatively flexible word order. Latin, German and other Slavic languages have been extensively influenced by their vocabulary.

    Dialects

Three main groups of Slovak dialects exist: Eastern, Southern, and Western. Western Slovak dialects dominate the Moravian dialects of the Czech language. Both the dialects of Slovak and Czech are mutually understandable, excluding maybe the extreme Eastern Slovak dialects and the Bohemian Czech dialect, since there are no sharp linguistic frontiers. The distinctive sibilant sound of Czech was not established in Slovak.

    Countries spoken

Approximately 5 million people speak Slovak as their native language, predominantly ethnic Slovak, as the official language of Slovakia and as one of the 24 official languages of the European Union.

Slovak speakers are also present in the Slovak diaspora in, to a lesser degree, the United States, the Czech Republic, Argentina, Serbia, Ireland, Romania, Poland (where Slovak is a known minority language), Canada, Germany, Hungary, Croatia, Israel, Austria, Ukraine, Norway, the United Kingdom, and other nations.
