Why Choose Language Interpreters Ltd?

Afrikaans Language, Origin and Dialects Spoken Over the World

Origin and History

Afrikaans is a Western Germanic language that originated from the Dutch vernacular spoken by Dutch settlers in South Africa during the 17th and 18th centuries. The language developed from the Hollandic Dutch dialect and gradually evolved into a distinct language with its own vocabulary, pronunciation and grammatical characteristics.

Afrikaans is closely related to Dutch and shares a significant amount of vocabulary with the Dutch language. Approximately 90–95% of Afrikaans vocabulary is of Dutch origin, although the language has also incorporated words and influences from other languages, including German, Malay, Portuguese and Khoisan languages.

The Afrikaans language emerged during the 18th century in the Dutch Cape Colony, where European Dutch dialects gradually developed into a separate language used by local communities. Over time, Afrikaans developed its own written form, literature and cultural identity.

Historically, Afrikaans was sometimes referred to as a “kitchen language” (kombuistaal) due to social attitudes towards the language during earlier periods. However, it later gained recognition as an established language with a rich literary tradition and an important role in South African society.

Early Afrikaans written records include poems and texts from the late 18th century, as well as documented conversations recorded by travellers during the early 19th century. The language was traditionally written using the Latin alphabet, while the Cape Muslim community also used Arabic-Afrikaans script in religious and educational writings.

Today, Afrikaans is recognised as one of the official languages of South Africa and continues to be widely used in education, media, business, government, legal proceedings and everyday communication.

Due to the global Afrikaans-speaking community, there is a continuing demand for professional Afrikaans interpreters, Afrikaans translation services and Afrikaans-to-English translation services across legal, healthcare, immigration, business and public sector environments.

At Language Interpreters Ltd, we provide experienced Afrikaans interpreters and professional Afrikaans translators in the UK, supporting clients with Afrikaans interpretation, certified Afrikaans translations and Afrikaans transcription services for courts, tribunals, NHS organisations, law firms, businesses and private clients.

Afrikaans Dialects

Afrikaans has several regional dialects that have developed through historical, geographical and cultural influences. Although Afrikaans originally evolved from Dutch dialects spoken by settlers in South Africa, it gradually developed into a recognised language with its own regional variations.

Until the early 20th century, Afrikaans was often considered a Dutch dialect in South Africa. It was later recognised as a separate language alongside Standard Dutch and gradually became established as an official language.

Historical studies of Afrikaans identify three main regional dialect groups:

  • Western Cape Afrikaans – Spoken mainly in the Western Cape region of South Africa and influenced by the early Dutch settlement communities as well as other cultural groups.
  • Northern Cape Afrikaans – Spoken in areas including the Northern Cape region, with historical influences from Dutch settlers and Khoisan communities.
  • Eastern Cape Afrikaans – Developed in the Eastern Cape region and influenced by interaction between Dutch settlers and local communities, including the Khoisan and Xhosa-speaking populations.

Other varieties of Afrikaans have also developed through migration, cultural exchange and regional usage. While differences may exist in pronunciation, vocabulary and expressions, standard Afrikaans has helped create greater consistency across Afrikaans-speaking communities.

Our professional Afrikaans interpreters and Afrikaans translators have experience supporting different Afrikaans language requirements, ensuring accurate communication for legal interpreting, court interpreting, medical appointments, immigration matters, business meetings, public sector services and certified Afrikaans translation services throughout the UK.

It is particularly widely spoken in the Western Cape and Northern Cape provinces, as well as parts of the Eastern Cape and other regions.
