Origin and History
Croatian is a South Slavic language and the standardised language used by Croats. It is the official language of Croatia and one of the 24 official languages of the European Union. Croatian is also one of the three official languages of Bosnia and Herzegovina and has recognised minority-language status in Serbia, particularly in the province of Vojvodina, as well as in neighbouring countries.
Croatian developed within the wider South Slavic linguistic area and shares a common historical background with Serbian, Bosnian and Montenegrin. The modern Croatian standard is based primarily on Neo-Štokavian, particularly the Eastern Herzegovinian variety, while Croatian has also been historically influenced by the Čakavian and Kajkavian dialect groups spoken in different parts of Croatia.
Efforts to establish a Croatian literary and linguistic standard developed particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Illyrian movement played an important role in promoting a common literary language, while Croatian language scholars subsequently contributed to the development of modern spelling, grammar and vocabulary.

Croatian Dialects
Croatian has three main dialect groups: Štokavian, Chakavian and Kajkavian. These dialect groups differ in pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and other linguistic features and are traditionally distinguished partly by the forms used for the interrogative pronoun meaning “what”: što, ča and kaj, respectively.
The main Croatian dialect groups and regional varieties include:
- Štokavian (Štokavsko narječje) – The largest of the three Croatian dialect groups and the principal basis of the modern Croatian standard language. Štokavian-speaking Croatian communities are found across several parts of Croatia and also among Croatian communities outside the country. It includes a range of regional varieties, including Ikavian, Ijekavian and other local forms.
- Chakavian (Čakavsko narječje) – Spoken mainly along the Croatian Adriatic coast and islands, as well as parts of Istria, the Croatian Littoral, Lika and inland areas. It is particularly associated with the islands and coastal regions and is characterised by a number of distinctive phonological, grammatical and vocabulary features.
- Kajkavian (Kajkavsko narječje) – Spoken mainly in northern Croatia, particularly north of the Kupa River, including areas around Zagreb, Varaždin and Međimurje. Kajkavian has preserved a number of older linguistic features and also shows historical and continuing influence from neighbouring Slovenian and Chakavian varieties.
Within these three major groups are numerous regional dialects and local varieties. For example, Kajkavian is traditionally divided into several dialect areas, while Chakavian contains substantial regional variation across the Croatian coast and islands. Štokavian also includes a number of distinct Croatian dialects and sub-dialects, reflecting the geographical spread of the group.
Croatian also has differences between formal and everyday spoken language. Standard Croatian is used in education, government, official communication, literature, media and professional settings, while everyday speech may reflect regional pronunciation, vocabulary and grammatical features associated with a speaker’s local dialect.
