Origin and History
Dutch is a West Germanic language belonging to the Germanic branch of the Indo-European language family. It developed from the Germanic varieties spoken in the Low Countries, gradually emerging as a distinct language from around the early medieval period. The oldest surviving Dutch words and texts date back to the early Middle Ages, while the main characteristics of Old Dutch had become established by around the 8th century.
During the Middle Ages, Middle Dutch developed from regional varieties spoken across the Low Countries. It was not yet a single standardised language and contained significant regional differences. From the 16th century onwards, a more unified written form of Dutch gradually developed, influenced particularly by the language varieties of Brabant and Holland.
A major milestone in the development of Standard Dutch was the publication of the Statenbijbel (States Bible) in 1637. Its language drew on several regional varieties and contributed significantly to the development of a more cohesive written standard that could be understood across the Dutch-speaking area.
The modern Dutch language continued to develop through the interaction of regional varieties in the Netherlands and Flanders. Dutch in Belgium, particularly in Flanders, shares the same standard language while retaining distinctive regional pronunciation, vocabulary and expressions. Today, Dutch is treated as a pluricentric language, with established standard varieties in the Netherlands, Belgium, Suriname and the Dutch-speaking Caribbean.

Dutch has a wide range of regional dialects and varieties across the Netherlands and Flanders in Belgium. Traditional classifications generally distinguish several major groups, including Hollandic, West Flemish, East Flemish, Brabantian, Limburgish and Low Saxon. These varieties can differ in pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure.
The main Dutch dialect groups and regional varieties include:
- Hollandic (Hollands) – Traditionally spoken in North Holland, South Holland and much of Utrecht. Modern Standard Dutch has been strongly influenced by varieties from this region.
- Brabantian (Brabants) – Spoken in North Brabant in the Netherlands and much of Flemish Brabant and Antwerp in Belgium. Brabantian has numerous local varieties, including Antwerp and other urban and regional forms.
- Limburgish (Limburgs) – Spoken in Limburg in the Netherlands and Belgian Limburg. Limburgish contains substantial regional variation and is recognised as a regional language in the Netherlands.
- West Flemish (West-Vlaams) – Spoken mainly in West Flanders in Belgium and parts of neighbouring Zeeland in the Netherlands. It has distinctive pronunciation and vocabulary features.
- East Flemish (Oost-Vlaams) – Spoken primarily in East Flanders in Belgium, with several local varieties differing in pronunciation and vocabulary.
- Zeelandic (Zeeuws) – Spoken mainly in the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands. It shows historical connections with neighbouring West Flemish varieties and contains several local dialects.
- Low Saxon (Nedersaksisch) – Spoken mainly across northeastern and eastern Netherlands, including parts of Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel and Gelderland. It includes varieties such as Twents, Achterhoeks and Gronings and is recognised as a regional language in the Netherlands.
There are also transitional and contact varieties, particularly in areas where Dutch comes into contact with Frisian, German and other regional languages. Frisian itself is a separate West Germanic language rather than a dialect of Dutch, although varieties such as Stadsfries and Bildts show historical Dutch-Frisian contact.
Dutch also has differences between formal and everyday spoken language. Standard Dutch is used in education, government, official communication, professional settings and much of the media, while everyday speech may contain regional pronunciation, vocabulary and expressions.
Although many Dutch dialects are closely related, some regional varieties can differ significantly from Standard Dutch and may be difficult for speakers unfamiliar with them to understand.
