Origin and History
British Sign Language (BSL) developed within the British Deaf community and has a long history in the United Kingdom. Records indicate that sign language was used by Deaf communities in England as early as the 15th century, with historical references to signs appearing in written records from this period. One of the earliest documented records of a sign language marriage ceremony dates from 1576, involving Thomas Tilsye and Ursula Russel.
The development of organised Deaf education also played an important role in the development of BSL. The Braidwood school, originally established in Edinburgh, used an early form of sign-supported communication known as the Combined System. The school later moved to London, where it attracted international interest in Deaf education and communication.
BSL developed naturally within the British Deaf community and, like spoken languages, has its own grammar, syntax, vocabulary and linguistic structure. It is a visual and spatial language in which meaning is conveyed through hand movements, facial expressions, body movement and the use of space.
BSL is not simply a signed version of English. It has its own grammatical rules and sentence structures, which can differ significantly from spoken English. The use of proforms, spatial referencing and the organisation of signs within signing space are important features of BSL grammar.
Different sign languages are also distinct from one another. A sign used in British Sign Language may have a completely different meaning or form in another sign language, just as words differ between spoken languages. BSL should therefore be treated as a language in its own right rather than as a visual representation of English.
