Bambara language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.

Origin and History

Bamana, also known as Bambara or Bamanankan, is Mali's lingua franca and national language spoken by possibly 15 million people (5 million native Bambara people and about 10 million second-language users). About 80 percent of Mali's population is projected to speak Bambara as a first or second language. In comparison to speakers of Doula, who are Muslim, the native name Bamanankan means "the language (kan) of heathens (Bámànán), people who refuse Islam".

As a lingua franca, Bamana is spoken in Mali. In the areas east, south, and north of Bamako, where native speakers and/or those who identify as part of the Bambara ethnic community are most heavily inhabited, the language is most spoken. After diverging from other Manding groups, these regions are also commonly considered to be the historical geographical origin of the Bambara people, particularly Ségou. Bambara has been written mainly in the Latin script since 1967, using some additional phonetic characters.

Most of the history of Bamanankan is unwritten and is mostly maintained by oral practise. What is known is that the Sahel (including present-day Mali) was settled by the Mande people and established a succession of Sahelian kingdoms, including the Mali Empire. Since 1880, Mali was occupied by France.

Bamanankan is used in Mali in mass media (radio, newspapers), in education for adults (French is the official language of primary school education) and in daily communication.
