Bemba language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.
Origin and History
ChiBemba, the Bemba language, is a Bantu language spoken predominantly by the Bemba people in north-eastern Zambia and by about 18 related ethnic groups as a lingua franca, including the Bisa people of Mpika and Lake Bangweulu, and to a lesser degree in Katanga in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, and Botswana. Bemba is the most spoken Bantu indigenous language and a lingua franca in Zambia, including all its dialects, where the Bemba constitute the largest ethnic group spoken by 5 million people. The Bemba people are descendants of the settlers of the Kingdom of Luba, which flourished in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo Province of Katanga, and in north-eastern Zambia. Bemba is a tonal language, with two simple tones, high and low. Tone is phonemic, indicating semantic differences between words. Modern Bemba has a variety of loan words from several languages, most notably Portuguese, Arabic, Swahili, English, Afrikaans and Zulu, reflecting the very complex state of language over the past few decades, primarily due to the region's political and economic background. Bemba, spoken by many people who live in urban areas, is one of the most commonly spoken languages in Zambia and is one of the seven recognised regional languages of Zambia. While Malawian by descent, Zambia's first president, Kenneth Kaunda, was raised in a Bemba-speaking group, and two of the four Zambian presidents have since been Bemba-speakers. Bemba has many dialects, all of which are Bemba varieties spoken by other tribes that have traditionally come under the dominance of Bemba. Bemba has a large amount of literature and there are narratives, poetry and plays. In the early 1900s, Bemba was targeted as a major language for processing religious and educational materials.
