Bulgarian Language, Origin and Dialects Spoken Over the World

Origin and History

Bulgarian is a South Slavic language primarily spoken in Bulgaria and is part of the Indo-European language family. It is closely related to Macedonian and forms part of the South Slavic language group.

The written history of Bulgarian dates back to the 9th century, when Old Church Slavonic was developed through the work of Saints Cyril and Methodius and their followers. The language played an important role in the translation of Christian texts and the development of Slavic literacy and literature.

Middle Bulgarian developed between approximately the 12th and 15th centuries, during which time the language continued to evolve in literature, administration and religious writing. Bulgarian subsequently developed several distinctive grammatical characteristics, including the loss of most grammatical case endings, the development of a postposed definite article and the loss of the infinitive.

Modern Bulgarian began to emerge from the 16th century onwards. During the period of Ottoman rule, the language incorporated vocabulary from Turkish and Greek, while later periods brought additional influences from Russian, French, German and other languages. Today, Bulgarian is the official language of Bulgaria and has been one of the official languages of the European Union since Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007.

Bulgarian interpreters play an invaluable role in fostering inclusivity and effective communication by overcoming linguistic barriers in a wide range of settings. Whether supporting private clients, business negotiations, immigration appointments, NHS consultations, court hearings or social services, professional Bulgarian interpreters provide accurate, confidential and culturally sensitive interpretation tailored to individual requirements.

Legal Aid Qualified Bulgarian interpreters and translators also make a significant contribution to the justice system by facilitating effective communication between legal professionals and Bulgarian-speaking individuals. Alongside Bulgarian translation services, legal aid translation services help ensure that legal documents, witness statements, court proceedings and other important information are translated accurately, enabling Bulgarian-speaking clients to understand their rights and participate fully in legal proceedings.

As demand for Bulgarian interpreting services continues to grow throughout London and across the UK, experienced Bulgarian interpreters and translators remain essential in supporting law firms, courts, NHS organisations, local authorities, businesses and private clients with professional language solutions.

Bulgarian Dialects

Bulgarian has a range of regional dialects and varieties that differ in pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and expressions. Although Modern Standard Bulgarian is used in formal communication, education, government, media and official documents, regional dialects continue to be spoken in different parts of Bulgaria and within Bulgarian-speaking communities abroad. Professional Bulgarian interpreters may therefore need an understanding of regional linguistic differences when supporting clients from different backgrounds.

The main Bulgarian dialect groups include:

  • Western Bulgarian Dialects – Spoken mainly in western Bulgaria, including areas around Sofia and regions close to the borders with Serbia and North Macedonia. These dialects have distinctive pronunciation, vocabulary and grammatical features.
  • Eastern Bulgarian Dialects – Spoken across much of eastern Bulgaria and along the Black Sea region. Eastern varieties form an important part of the Bulgarian dialect landscape and have influenced the development of the modern standard language.
  • Northern Bulgarian Dialects – Spoken primarily across northern Bulgaria, including areas along the Danube. These varieties contain regional differences in pronunciation, vocabulary and grammatical forms.
  • Southern Bulgarian Dialects – Spoken across southern Bulgaria, including areas in the Rhodope and surrounding regions. Some southern varieties retain distinctive linguistic characteristics that differ from Standard Bulgarian.
  • Rhodope Dialects – A group of distinctive Bulgarian dialects spoken in the Rhodope Mountains. They are notable for preserving a number of older linguistic features and for their distinctive vocabulary and pronunciation.
  • Shopi Dialects – Spoken primarily in the western regions around Sofia and neighbouring areas. Shopi speech has distinctive pronunciation and vocabulary and forms part of the Western Bulgarian dialect group.
  • Rup Dialects – A broad group of dialects spoken mainly in south-eastern Bulgaria, including the Strandzha, Thracian and Rhodope regions. They contain a number of distinctive grammatical and phonological characteristics.

Although Bulgarian dialects can vary considerably between regions, Modern Standard Bulgarian provides a common form for formal and professional communication. Experienced Bulgarian interpreters understand the importance of identifying regional language differences and, where necessary, adapting their interpretation to ensure clear and accurate communication.

Our experienced Bulgarian interpreters support clients speaking different Bulgarian regional varieties across legal, healthcare, public sector, immigration, social services and commercial environments, helping ensure that language differences do not create barriers to effective communication.
