Ga language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.
Origin and History
Ga is the primary language of the Ga people, an ethnic community of Ghana, in and around the capital of Accra, Kwa. It has a phonemic distinction between 3 lengths of vowels. Ga is a Kwa language that forms part of the Niger-Congo tribe. It is very intricately connected to Adangme, and within Kwa, they form the Ga-Dangme branch together. There are several regional dialects spoken in Ghana, and Kwa, Mande, Gur, Senufo, Kulango, and Gbe are grouped into six major groups. Kwa is by far the largest family of languages, and it is grouped into many distinct dialects. One of these dialects is the Akan dialect, which is spoken by more than 40 per cent of the Ghanaian population, in addition to being spoken in regions of the Ivory Coast. About 60% of Ghanaians speak some sort of Kwa.
In south-east Ghana, Ga is spoken in and around the capital of Accra. It has comparatively little dialectal variation. While the official language of Ghana is English, Ga is one of 16 languages in which content is written by the Office of Ghana Languages.
In the southern regions of Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo and Benin and in the extreme southwestern corner of Nigeria, Kwa is a branch of the Niger-Congo language family composed of 45 languages spoken by about 20 million people.
