Georgian language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.

Origin and History

Georgian is a language of the South Caucasian or Kartvelian region. In Georgia, where it is the official language, it is spoken predominantly. Georgian is synonymous with Mingrelian, Laz, and Svan, both of which are spoken predominantly in Georgia and written with the alphabet of Georgia (Mkhedruli). With the other South Caucasian languages, Georgian is considered to share a similar ancestral tongue. During the 1st millennium BC, it began to evolve as a distinct language in a region that became the Kingdom of Iberia.

Dialects

The Georgian dialects, representing a typical ethnographic subdivision of the Georgian people, are categorised according to their regional distribution. There are a range of dialects in Georgia: Imeretian, Kartlian, Gurian, Adjaran, Kakhetian, Tush, Pshavian, Meskhetian, and Mtiuletian. In the northwestern part of Georgia, the Svan and Megrelian languages are also spoken. Beyond the Western and Eastern groups, a Southern category has also been proposed by some researchers. This can be further subdivided, into five major dialect groups as indicated by Topuria, Gigineishvili and K'avtaradze.

Countries spoken

Around 4 million people speak Georgian, mostly in Georgia, but also in indigenous populations in northern Turkey and Azerbaijan, as well as in the diaspora, such as Russia, Turkey, Iran, Europe, and North America.
