Hindko language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.

Origin and History

The expression "Hindko" is a Pashto word most widely used to mean "the Indian language" or "language of Hind" but it has evolved to describe types of Indo-Aryan speech spoken in the northern Indian subcontinent as opposed to the neighbouring Pashto, an Iranian language. Hindko is a term used by a mixed group of Lahnda dialects spoken by several million people of different ethnic backgrounds in several discontinuous areas in northwest Pakistan, mainly in the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.
The entire Hindko dialect continuum is split by the Ethnologist into two languages: Northern Hindko for the Hazara dialects, and Southern Hindko for the remaining varieties. This classification finds support in the findings of the intelligibility tests carried out by Rensch, which also showed that the southern dialects are more commonly understood in the Hindko region than the northern ones.

Dialects

Hindko dialects eventually move to other varieties of Lahnda and Punjabi in the south. For example, Saraiki dialects are found in the southwest around the Salt Range, and at least one of them – the one spoken in the Dera Ismail Khan District – is often referred to as "Hindko". To the southeast, with the Galyat zone of Abbottabad district and the area of Muzaffarabad in Azad Kashmir roughly falling on the border between the two, Hindko is in a dialect continuum with Pahari-Pothwa.

With Punjabi and Saraiki, Hindko is mutually intelligible, and has more affinities with the latter than with the former. In morphology and phonology, discrepancies with other Punjabi varieties are more pronounced than in syntax. For this language group, an alternate local name is Hindki. A Hindko speaker can be known as Hindki, Hindkun, or Hindkowan (Hindkuwan).

Spoken

Hindko varieties are predominantly spoken in the central area of the Attock district in the north-western corner of Punjab province, and in two neighbouring regions: Peshawar to the north-west, and Hazara to the north-east, both in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Hazara's Hindko also stretches east into Kashmir's surrounding areas.

The selection of proficient Hindko interpreters is of utmost importance.

Hindko interpreters play a pivotal role in bridging communication gaps across diverse settings. Their significance extends beyond the mere linguistic harmony, as their primary objective is to eliminate language barriers, whether for judicial guidance or private gatherings. This commitment aims to promote fairness and inclusion.

The Hindko Legal Aid Interpreter Program is an initiative that has made significant contributions to the success of legal proceedings by addressing the urgent requirement for proficient legal interpreters. This program provides precise and culturally appropriate translation services that are crucial for upholding the law and overcoming linguistic obstacles between legal professionals and individuals who speak Hindko.

Legal aid interpreters are an essential part of easing communication between people with limited English proficiency and the legal system. They ensure that people who speak Hindko receive the essential information about legal representation. Language barriers can impede individuals from fully comprehending their rights or actively participating in legal proceedings in diverse locales.

It is essential to develop proficient Hindko legal aid interpreters and translators in order to ensure equitable treatment for native speakers. Legal procedures are safeguarded by these professionals, who provide precise and culturally appropriate translations. They encourage open discussion and foster an atmosphere that encourages individuals to participate in legal matters, allowing them to understand their rights and obligations.

Whether employed by a private entity or as a component of a regulated program, such as the Hindko Legal Aid Interpreter Program, the utilisation of specialised Hindko interpreters holds paramount importance in fostering effective communication and guaranteeing fairness within the program.
