Kikongo language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.
Origin and History
Kikongo belongs to a family of Bantu languages. The Kongo language, also called Kikongo and spelled Congo, is the Bantu language of the Niger-Congo language family's Benue-Congo branch. The term that its speakers use is Kikongo. There are over seven million native Kongo speakers, many of whom live in Western Congo (Kinshasa), where the national language is Kongo.
In Congo (Brazzaville) and northern Angola, the remaining native speakers live. Seven million additional Africans say Kongo as a second language.
Dialects
Kongo has many dialects; San Salvador Kongo, spoken in Congo and Angola, has more than 1.5 million speakers and is mostly classified as a separate language because other Kongo dialects are not mutually intelligible.
