Kinyarwanda language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.

Origin and History

Kinyarwanda, spoken by at least 12 million people in Rwanda, the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and adjacent regions in southern Uganda, where it is known as Rufumbira, is the official language of Rwanda and of the Rwanda-Rundi dialect. Kinyarwanda (along with English, French and Kiswahili) is one of the four official languages of Rwanda and is spoken by almost all the indigenous people.

Kinyarwanda is a language with tonality. It has a two-way distinction between high and low tones, like many Bantu languages (low-tone syllables may be analysed as toneless). A diverse series of phonological laws is influenced by the realisation of tones in Kinyarwanda.

The official language of neighbouring Burundi is the mutually intelligible Kirundi dialect. The mutually intelligibl e dialects spoken in the North Kivu and South Kivu provinces of neighbouring DR Congo are Kinyabwisha and Kinyamulenge.

Kinyarwanda is a rich Bantu-origin language.

Dialects

A variety of Rwandan dialects are known by ethnology. Bufumbwa, Gitwa, Hutu, Igikiga, Kiga, Ikinyanduga and Rutwa are reportedly very close to each other: (Twa) Kinyarwanda is the official language of Rwanda and is used by part of the population of 2 more countries as a mother tongue. In the Niger-Congo language family, the Kinyarwanda language (native name: Ikinyarwanda) has its origins. It is most common in Rwanda, with a share of about 93 percent.

Countries spoken

A total of roughly 22.1 million people speak Kinyarwanda as their mother tongue globally.
