Origin and History

Ganda or Luganda is a Bantu language spoken in the African Great Lakes. It is one of the main languages in Uganda, spoken predominantly by more than eight million Ugandans and others in central Uganda, including Uganda's capital Kampala. Typologically, it is a heavily agglutinating, tonal language with subject-verb-object, word order and nominative-accusative morphosyntactic alignment. In some primary schools in Buganda, Luganda is used as pupils begin to learn English, Uganda's primary official language. Luganda was also the official language of instruction in Eastern Uganda primary schools until the 1960s. In the Buganda area of Uganda, most native speakers of Luganda, or Ganda, are found. It is spoken elsewhere in the country as a second language and is actually the most widely spoken of the 40 languages in Uganda.

Countries spoken

Luganda is mutually intelligible with Lusoga, spoken in the Busoga region of Uganda, and shares characteristics of the Bantu family with other languages, such as Kinyarwanda and Lingala. The noun class system is one of the most notable features of Bantu languages, in which nouns react in specific ways depending on whether they are human, plant, abstract, animal, etc. It is the most spoken Ugandan language, with at least eight million first-language speakers in the Buganda region and a million others fluent elsewhere. It parallels English as a second language and precedes Swahili.
