Mandarin language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.

    Origin and History

Mandarin is spoken in much of northern and southwestern China as a group of Sinitic (Chinese) languages. The community contains the dialect of Beijing, the basis of Traditional Chinese phonology. Mandarin originated in northern China and there are most Mandarin languages and dialects in the north, often referred to as Northern Chinese.

Many Mandarin varieties, such as those of the Southwest (including Sichuan) and Lower Yangtze (including the ancient capital of Nanjing), are not mutually intelligible or are only partly intelligible in the standard language. However, due to the number of native speakers, Mandarin is always put first in the list of languages.

    Dialects

Mandarin is by far the largest of the seven or ten Chinese dialect groups, spoken in a wide geographical area by 70 percent of all Chinese speakers, ranging from Yunnan in the southwest to Xinjiang in the northwest and in the northeast to Heilongjiang. In contrast to the more mountainous south, this is usually due to the greater ease of travel and trade in the North China Plain, along with the comparatively recent dissemination of Mandarin to frontier areas.

They have four tones in most Mandarin varieties. In most of these varieties, the final stops of Middle Chinese have vanished, although others have fused them as a final glottal stop. Many Mandarin varieties preserve retroflex initial consonants, like the Beijing dialect, that have been lost in Chinese southern varieties.

    Countries spoken

More than 1 billion individuals speak Mandarin Chinese, making it the most commonly spoken language in the world. Although it may be clear that Mandarin Chinese is commonly spoken in Asian countries, you may be shocked by how many Chinese communities in the world exist. Mandarin Chinese can be heard on the streets of the U.S., South Africa and Nicaragua.
