Mandingo language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.

Origin and History

Mandingo is the Mandinka language spoken by the inhabitants of Guinea, northern Guinea-Bissau, the Casamance region of Senegal, and in Gambia, where it is one of the major languages. Mandinka belongs to Mande's Manding branch and is thus close, but with just 5 instead of 7 vowels, to Bambara and Maninka/Malinké.

In most places, it is a tonal language with two tones low and strong, but the unique variety spoken in Gambia and Senegal borders on pitch accent due to its similarity to non-tonal neighbouring languages such as Wolof.

The native people who speak Mandinka, bear the same name as the language, are native to West Africa, in this region of Africa are most of the countries where you can find native Mandinka speakers. Native Mandinka speakers are found in Mali, Chad, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and six other countries, and it is a recognised minority language in Senegal.

Mandinka is Senegal's own language. It is used as a first language by about 6 percent of the people there. Mandinka (or Mandingo) is part of a group of West African languages that is collectively known as Manding. It is Gambia's dominant language. About 1.2 million people talk about it in total, particularly in Senegal and the central-northern portion of Guinea-Bissau. There are a limited number of speakers in the United Kingdom.
