Serbian language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.
Origin and History
Serbian belongs to the South Slavic group of the Indo-European language family's Slavic branch. The standardised variety of the Serbo-Croatian language used predominantly by Serbs is Serbian. It is the official and national language of Serbia, one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's three official languages, and co-official in Montenegro, which is spoken by a relative majority of the people. Serbo-Croatian, known as the spoken language of Serbs, Croats, Bosniaks and Montenegrins, were officially divided into three mutually intelligible languages, Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian, after the dissolution of Yugoslavia.
Dialects
Serbian is based on the most prevalent Serbo-Croatian, Shtokavian dialects (more precisely the Šumadija-Vojvodina and Eastern Herzegovina dialects, which are also the basis of standard Croatian, Bosnian, and Montenegrin varieties, hence the Declaration of the National Language of Croats, Bosniaks, Serbs and Montenegrins). The image of the Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian dialects is difficult and is shared by both languages. The main dialectal distinction is based on the term for 'what' in the pronunciation of the initial consonant.
Countries spoken
In Bosnia, Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Romania, Serbian is also spoken.
