Somali language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.

Origin and History

Somali belongs to the Cushitic branch and is an Afroasiatic language. Somali is the official language of Somalia and Somaliland, the national language of Djibouti, and the working language of Ethiopia's Somali region, as well as of North-East Kenya. A few nearby ethnic minority communities and individuals use it as an adoptive language.

The Somali-speaking diaspora grew after the start of the Somali Civil War in the early 1990s, with newer Somali-speaking populations emerging in parts of the Middle East, North America and Europe. After Oromo, the second most widely spoken Cushitic language is Somali. With the Latin alphabet, the Somali language is written officially.

Somali is usually divided into three main dialect groups (Ethnologue):Northern Somali, also known as Common or Standard Somali, is the most commonly used dialect that serves as the basis for Standard Somali; Benaadir (coastal Somali) is spoken on the coast of Benadir and also in the capital of Mogadishu. Benaadir speakers readily understand Standard Somali and Af-Ashraaf is a distinct variety with limited intelligibility for Standard Somali speakers.

Countries spoken

A total of approximately 20.3 million people speak Somali as their mother tongue worldwide. In Somalia,Djibouti, Ethiopia,Kenya, Yemen and the Somali diaspora, Somali is spoken by Somalis. A few ethnic minority groups and people in these areas also speak it as an adoptive language.
